퀸(Queen)이 1980년에 발표한 8번째 스튜디오 앨범 <The Game>에 수록된 곡으로 싱글만 7백만장 이상이 팔렸고 미국, 캐나다 1위, 아일랜드 6위, 영국 7위, 미국 1980년 결산 14위, 미국 역대 결산 40위(2017년 기준)등을 기록했다. 

곡은 팀의 베이스 담당인 존 디콘(John Deacon)이 만들었고, 퀸과 라인홀드 맥(Reinhold Mack)이 공동으로 프로듀서를 맡았다. 

처음 이곡을 만들었 때 정작 팀원들은 이곡을 맘에 들어하지 않았다. 하지만 브라이언의 매니저와 마이클잭슨이 싱글로 발표해야 한다고 계속적으로 의견을 제시해 싱글로 발표하게 된다. 

로저 테일러(Roger Taylor)의 드럼 반주가 압권인 곡이다. 

가사는 살인을 살인을 하기로 맘먹은 화자가 자신을 다독이며 문 앞에 다가가 총을 쏴 7명을 죽인다는 내용을 담고 있다. 존은 1929년 미국 금주법 시대에 있었던 '발렌타인데이 대학살' 에서 영감을 얻어 만들었다고 한다. 그 사건은 알 카포네(Alphonse Gabriel "AI" Capone)쪽이 라이벌 조직인 조지 벅스 모란(Geroge Bucks Moran)의 조직원 6명과 보행자 1명을 향해 총기를 난사한 사건이다. 'Biting the dust'는 '사망'에 대한 완곡한 표현으로 스코틀랜드 작가 토비야스 스몰렛(Tobias Smollett)의 1750년 작품인 <Adventures Of Gil Blas Of Santillane>에 처음으로 등장하는 표현이다.
